Geologic Mapping in Oxford

The U.S. Geological Survey, under the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program, will be conducting a geologic mapping project over the next 14 months in the Oxford area.  The purpose of the work is to map the bedrock geology and characterize the geometry, physical characteristics, and spatial distribution of fractures exposed in bedrock outcrops throughout the Worcester South quadrangle.  The work is being conducted cooperatively with the Massachusetts State Geologist’s Office.

Geologist Gregory Walsh will be walking and driving in Oxford looking at rocks.  He will be driving a silver 2007 Jeep Liberty with insignia identifying it as a USGS vehicle.  While conducting his work Mr. Walsh will make every effort to ask permission before crossing private land.  His work does not disturb the environment other than acquiring an occasional rock sample.  Mr. Walsh will be wearing a bright orange survey vest and carrying a backpack in which he keeps the tools of his trade.
